This is a fast-paced world and we tend to get stressed for various reasons. In this article we will try to list all the possible ill effects of stress. We will try to understand the causes of stress and its effect on our body.
The Cause
Stress can come from various sources. The most common are Work Stress, Life Stress, Stress due to internal reasons etc.
What Causes Work Stress?
Some of the reasons of Stress arising due to your work are listed below:
- Unhappy with your job, not liking job profile
- Long working hours
- Taking or given over responsibility
- Unprofessional work environment/no say in decision making
- Insecurity of losing job
- Being discriminated at workplace
What Causes Life Stress?
Life stress arises due to your personal life space. The incidents happening in your personal life can cause stress. The reason can be from below list:
- Death of some loved ones
- Marriage or divorce
- Financial Crunch
- Chronic disease or illness
- Emotional Disturbance (depression, anxiety, anger, grief, guilt, low self-esteem)
- Some traumatic event like theft, rape, or violence against you or a loved one
- Enmity from someone
What Causes Stress coming from inside?
Many times stress comes from inside rather than due to some external factors, we need to identify them as well. Reasons can be from the below:
- Fear of losing
- Uncertainty/Confusion
- Your Attitude
- Perception about the others/self
- Not achieving goals (realistic or unrealistic)
- Failure
- Some radical change (present or future)
The Effect
Stress affects different individuals differently depending upon their ability to withstand the stressful situations. Our body releases different hormones in case of stress which can cause “fight or flight” response to the stress. A fight response is that in which you respond in order to fight the stress and reasons behind it and in flight response you tend to escape from the cause.
There are two type of stress:
i. Acute Stress:
These are short term stress, the symptoms of this kind of stress are speeding up of heartbeat , faster breathing, tense muscles tense, sweating etc. People tend to recover fast from these stress.
The effects of Acute Stress on our body are:
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Sleeplessness
- Lack of Concentration
- Upset stomach Irritability
ii. Chronic Stress:
If the stress stays for longer period of time then it is called Chronic Stress and it can lead to serious health issues in your body. Some of the effects of chronic stress are listed below:
- Prolonged Depression
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Arrhythmia (Abnormal heartbeat)
- Atherosclerosis (Hardening of the arteries)
- Heart diseases
- Heart attack
- Heartburn, ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome
- Upset stomach like cramps, constipation, and diarrhea
- Weight gain or loss
- Changes in sex drive, fertility problems, reduction of sperm count
- Flare-ups of asthma or arthritis
- Skin problems such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis
Most of us do not take stress seriously but it is high time we avoid stress and in case of stress we should consult a professional stress management consultant or a doctor.
