It is a known fact that staying up late at night and waking up late in the morning is very dangerous for health.Researchers from Northwestern Medicine in Chicago and the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom tracked almost half a million adults ages 38 to 73 in the U.K. over an average of 6.5 years. The focus of the investigation was to find the link between mortality and a person’s innate inclination toward mornings or evenings.

Findings, published in the journal Chronobiology International, reveal that men and women who identified as “definite evening types” at the beginning of the study had a 10% increased risk of all-cause mortality compared with “definite morning types.”

According to the study, people staying awake till late are more likely to get subjected to diseases like diabetes, psychological and neurological disorders.“It could be that people who are up late have an internal biological clock that doesn’t match their external environment,” said co lead author Kristen Knutson, associate professor of neurology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

“It could be psychological stress, eating at the wrong time for their body, not exercising enough, not sleeping enough, being awake at night by yourself, maybe drug or alcohol use. There are a whole variety of unhealthy behaviors related to being up late in the dark by yourself.”

Researchers say genetics and environment play a big role in deciding the fact whether you are a morning or night person. Doctors suggest that every chore should be finished on time i.e.a bit early so that there is no need of staying up till late at night.

The implications of the research are more than individual. “This is a public health issue that can no longer be ignored,” said co-author Malcolm von Schantz, a professor of chronobiology at the University of Surrey.

“We should discuss allowing evening types to start and finish work later, where practical. And we need more research about how we can help evening types cope with the higher effort of keeping their body clock in synchrony with sun time.”

So sleep early, wake up early and have a beautiful day.
