Beauty Hack – DIY Lip Balm
DIY Lip Balm Recipe
There are innumerable many varieties of lip balms out there. Yet I find it so hard to find one that is just right. I hate the likes of lip gloss and anything that feels liquidy, slimy or wet on my lips. (Can you guess I am a matte lip lover?)
But come winter, all of that goes out the window ‘cause my lips get very dry and flaky. So I switch to cream-based lipsticks and lip balms (tinted or otherwise). For someone very particular about the textures of lip products, it is very hard for me to find one that is moisturizing enough yet does not feel wet on my lips. I have tried and tested so many brands – from drugstore varieties to high priced products. The thought of creating my own version has also been hovering in my head for some time now.
I actually stumbled upon this lip balm recipe by accident. I happened to have some raw organic shea butter on hand and this brilliant idea hit me to turn it into a lip balm.
This is how I created my own lip balm:
Ingredients:
- Raw unrefined shea butter (You can buy it on Amazon) – 1 tbsp
- Pure coconut oil – 1/2 tbsp
- Vanilla extract/essence – 3-4 drops
Method:
Just warmed up the shea butter and coconut oil in a double boiler (small saucepan with 1 inch water simmering with a small glass bowl over it) until melted. After removing from heat, added the vanilla extract. Stored in a small container and lo and behold, I had my very own lip balm that smelled like cupcakes!! 🙂
Note: Most online recipes for lip balm use beeswax as a base, you can add it if you want. I did not have any on hand so left it out. Also you can switch shea butter with cocoa butter or mango butter if your heart desires. Regarding flavours, I mean you can go all out. There is no limit to the combinations of flavours you can try. I plan on trying one with beeswax, orange essential oil and orange peels. Will post the recipe soon.
